Simply Migrate - Migrating A PST File To Mimecast

This article explains how to migrate PST files to the Mimecast API using Simply Migrate, and is intended for Mimecast Partner Administrators.

Prerequisites

  • You are a Mimecast Partner Administrator.
  • You are a Microsoft Exchange Administrator.

Migrating PST files

Administrators can migrate PST files as part of installation of Simply Migrate, by following the installation wizard, which will allow administrators to select the required Source.

If Simply Migrate has already been set up and initialized, the administrator will need to start the job wizard from within the Batches and Jobs view, by using the following steps:
  1. Select the Green List icon against the Batch to create the jobs, and choose Job creation wizard from the list.

In the example image above, the PST files are local to the server, so a drive letter has been used. If files are zipped, the administrator will need to toggle Zipped PST.

  1. A list of PST files found in the selected folder will be displayed, together with the user's email address of the (which is determined where possible, from the name of the PST file).

  2. If PST files have been discovered without email addresses:
    • Add the SMTP address of a user to the Mailbox field, and select the checkbox to add the PST file to the eligible section. This will cause the content of the PST file to be migrated into that user's archive.
    • Check the box without an SMTP address. This will cause the PST file contents to be migrated as Non User journal data.
    • The Bad Address Resolution section in the top banner gives you the ability to download / upload a CSV file that with assign the correct SMTP address to each line, instead of doing it one at a time.
  • In the banner above the PST file list, you will see that you can add a date filter, filter the list of jobs, and handle Bad address resolution.
  • Most of the time, you will not need to add these, but you will be prompted about date filters when you click on Create Jobs.
  • Filtering the jobs will only change your view of the jobs when you create them; Simply Migrate will attempt to create jobs for all ticked items, not just those visible in the filter.
  1. Click on Create Jobs.

  1. Ensure that the number of jobs being created is correct, and consider if a date filter is required.
  2. Click on Create the Jobs.
  3. Jobs will be created and a tick will be shown in the job status, next to all the source files that have been selected. PST file migration is complete.
  • If the administrator attempts to create jobs for the same PST files in the same batch, there are safety measures in place to avoid duplication of jobs.
  • The administrator will be shown the original Job ID and a "No Entry" sign, indicating that the job has not been created, because it already exists.
