This article contains information on managing and releasing email attachments in Mimecast, including steps to release attachments, view logs, and monitor released items, ensuring secure and efficient email attachment handling.
- Log in to the Mimecast Administration Console.
- Navigate to Email Security | Attachments.
- Right-click on the Message to be released.
- Select one of the following pop-up menu items:
| Menu Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Release Original Message | The original message is released to the end user with its attachments. This maintains the context of the attachment. |
| Release Attachment | The attachment is released to the end user via a system notification. You can release multiple attachments by selecting the check box to their left. |
| Release Attachment to Sandbox | The attachment is released to the sandbox. |
| View Attachment Detail | Displays the stripped attachment review page. |
| View Email Data | Displays the contents of the email for an administrator with the correct permissions. This allows for a preview of the attachment prior to releasing it to the end user. |
You can also access each of these functions inside an attachment record. By clicking on an attachment record, it opens to display further detail. A toolbar is also displayed with buttons to replicate the functions above.
Released Attachments Log
When an item is released from stripped attachments, an entry is listed in the released attachments log. To view the log:
- Navigate to Email Security | Attachments.
- Click on the View button.
- Select the Release Log menu item. The release log is displayed for the last month by default and provides the following information:
| Field / Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Released By | Provides the email address of the user (if released via a digest) or the administrator who released the attachment. |
| Attachment Name | Displays the full name of the attachment. |
| Released To | Displays the email address to which the attachment was delivered. |
| Method | Specifies how the attachment was released. This can either be from the administration console or self-release (for an attachment that has been downloaded from the link provided). |
| Type | Specifies whether it was the original email that was released or only the attachment. |
| Date / Time | Displays the time and date that the message was released. |
Comments
I have a few unanswered questions I hope someone can help me with.
Once the attachment is released where does it go?
Where/how can the user access the attachment?
Are all attachment types treated the same (.zip, .xlms, etc.)?
Hi Jesse
Thank you for your comment. According to the documentation, the attachment is released to the end user via a system notification and can be viewed in the “View Attachment Detail” menu item.
In order to get you the best solution possible, would you please post it into our Community? Not only will it be addressed by Cybersecurity peers, but the Mimecast team as well. Once you receive a solution, it can be bookmarked for easy retrieval.
