Connect Process - Configuring Your Journaling

Customers currently using the Connect Application are advised to complete their onboarding setup as soon as possible, as the Connect Application is scheduled to be discontinued on the 31st of January, 2024.

This article contains information on configuring journaling for Mimecast, detailing steps for adding internal domains, creating journal connectors, and setting up journaling on various email servers, including Microsoft 365, On-Premises, and Google Workspace.

Journaling transfers copies of all internal emails from your email servers to Mimecast. This ensures that a complete archive of all the organization's emails are stored in a searchable, secure off-site environment. You can configure the rules that allow internal email communications to be captured. This allows inbound, outbound, and internal emails to be added to the archive and processed through security policies.

To configure your journaling you must:

  1. Add the internal domain to Mimecast.
  2. Create a journal connector in Mimecast.
  3. Configure journaling on your email server or hosted email service.

Configuring Journaling on Your Email Server or Hosted Email Service

The process for configuring journaling on your email server or hosted email service depends on the type of exchange you use. See the relevant section below.

Microsoft 365 Exchanges

Follow the instructions in the Configuring Office 365 Journaling page.

On Premises Exchanges

The process for configuring journaling on an On Premises Exchange depends on the type of exchange you use. Click on the relevant page below for full details.

Hosted Exchanges (HEX)

As journaling is a standard Exchange feature, all Hosted Exchange (HEX) environments should support journaling. This normally requires a separate Organization Unit (OU) created for each tenant. Once this is done, each tenant has the ability to configure their own organization settings. The tenant administrator logs into the web console to configure a journal rule.

Provide your hosting provider with the instructions relevant to your version of Exchange. See the links above for further details.

Google Workspace

Follow the instructions in the Email Security Cloud Gateway - Google Workspace- Configuring Journaling page.

Adding the Internal Domain to Mimecast

An internal domain (e.g. journaling.domain.com) is added to your account as part of the Connect Process. A journal email address is also created in the internal domain by running an LDAP synchronization.

Creating a Journal Connector in Mimecast

A Mimecast journal connector must be created, and all configuration changes completed before journaling is enabled. This can be tested in the Administration Console. Read the Journaling page for further information.
