Simply Migrate - Prerequisites

This article contains information on the hardware and system access requirements for installing Simply Migrate, including server specifications, necessary software installations, and access permissions needed for a successful migration process.

Simply Migrate is not pure cloud-to-cloud technology, which means hardware requirements exist to perform the migration. Therefore, before installing Simply Migrate, the Customer should focus on completing the required environment configuration, including all prerequisite access and supporting software installations.

Server Specifications

Requirement Requirement Detail
Migration Application Server The server responsible for processing the messages and getting them into the Mimecast platform. For a basic deployment, start with a single VM (or physical server) with a minimum of:
  • 8CPU | 8GB RAM
  • Windows Server 2016 or later
Microsoft SQL Server For implementations where you're expecting more than 300 average users, we recommend a dedicated Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Most customers provide a dedicated server
  • Can be Virtual
  • 8CPU | 16GB RAM
  • SQL Server 2016 or later

 

For larger-scale migrations, these specs may need to be increased.

Latest .NET 9.0 version To ensure a successful migration, it is crucial to have the latest version of .NET 9.x installed. Only versions that begin with "9" are supported; using any earlier or later versions will lead to errors during the migration process. If you need to determine which .NET version you are running, see Microsoft's article on "How to: Determine which .NET Framework versions are installed..."
Microsoft Windows PowerShell v7.5.1 or later If you are using an older Operating System, install the latest copy of PowerShell. As of January 2025, PowerShell version 7.5.1 is a requirement.
Anti-Virus Exclusion Set your exclusions to include the TEMP folder configured in the Configuration options.
You must ensurever.Client.exe
process is excluded. If you're writing to a PST file as a target, you are highly recommended to exclude the target folder.
  • Disable User Access Control (UAC)
  • Disable Real-Time Scanning
  • Https access to *.mimecast.com
  • Disable any outbound / IPS traffic scanning to mimecast.com

 

Required System Access

System Access Detail
Migration SQL Database The user context under which the Simply Migrate Management Shell is initially run requires DBCreator rights to correctly configure the SQL Database you wish to use during Discovery, Reporting, and Migration.

A few documented methods can be followed to configure DBCreator rights for an account in SQL Server.

From a high level, the account used to run the first implementation of the Simply Migrate Management Shell requires DBCreator rights, and for t the Simply Migrate Management Shell is then used under requires DBOwner rights against the Database created for use.

The default Database name is SimplyMigrate.

Disk size for SQL should aim to be 5% of the total migration size. So, for for for example, if you are migrating 1Tb of data, you will need 50GB.
Application Server Access
  • The account performing the migration must have Local Administrator rights on the server hosting the Mimecast Simply Migrate client software.
  • The account must also have System Admin rights on the SQL instance.
  • The application server running Simply Migrate must have access to the SQL instance.
  • The Dashboard Service must be installed under the same user account as above.
Location File The migration software will require an API Key and an API secret key to be generated by a Super Administrator in the Mimecast console – this is all included in the Location File.
