Message Routing - Attribute-Based Delivery Routing

This article provides information about using attribute-based delivery routing, one of Mimecast's policy options. Attributes are used as variable FROMs or TOs. Users can use this tool to migrate their accounts if they are using delivery routing policies and policies for delivery routing.

To configure your email routing, you will need to create a Delivery Routing Definition and apply this to a flow of traffic by using a Delivery Routing Policy

Before you begin:

  • Ensure that you have configured and tested your Directory Synchronization.
  • Determine which Attribute is available for all users. For this example, we will use the attribute "msexchhomeservername". This attribute is created as soon as a mailbox is generated for a user.

Creating an Attribute

  1. Log in to the Mimecast Administration Console.
  2. Click on the Users & Groups | Attributes menu item. A list of existing attributes is displayed.
  3. Select the Add New Attribute button.
  4. Complete the Attribute Properties to match the example displayed, ensuring that the:
      • Description and Prompt fields match the exact name of the attribute in the directory.
      • Prompt Type field is changed to Directory Linked Attribute.
Using Attribute Based Delivery
  1. Select the Save and Exit button. The attribute will now be displayed in the list.

Performing a Directory Synchronization

The next steps ensure that the attribute results are picked up from the Directory:

  1. Log in to the Mimecast Administration Console.
  2. Select the Users & Groups | Directory Synchronization menu item.
  3. Click the Sync Directory Data button and allow the sync to complete for a few minutes. A summary of the results is displayed once complete.
  4. Select the Directories | Internal Directories menu item.
  5. Select the Domain.
  6. Select a User from the domain listing.
  7. Navigate to the Attributes section and ensure that the Exchange server attribute with the relevant value is listed.

Browse Your LDAP

If you are not sure of the values for your new attribute field, you can use the Mimecast LDAP browser and copy the results.

  1. Log in to the Mimecast Administration Console.
  2. Select the Users & Groups | Directory Synchronization menu item.
  3. Select the Directory Connector.
  4. Click on the Directory Browser button.
  5. In the Directory Search Options Complete the filters to match the example entries shown below:
  6. Select the Search button to start the search. The results for every mailbox on your Exchange server are displayed.
  7. Copy the search results to a text file and save it for later use.

Configuring the Delivery Routing Policy

To configure the Delivery Routing policy:

  1. Log in to the Mimecast Administration Console.
  2. Select the Policies | Gateway Policies menu item.

A Delivery Routing definition is required prior to creating the policy.

  3. Create a Delivery Routing policy using the following details:
  1. In the Select Route field, specify the Delivery Route definition where emails should be sent when the attribute finds a match.
  2. Leave the Applies From fields with the default settings (i.e. Everyone).
  3. Change the Applies To option to Address Attributes.
  4. An additional Where Attribute field is displayed.
  5. Set the Where Attribute field to the "msexchhomeservername" attribute.
  6. Paste the copied Attribute result from the text file created earlier.
  7. Select the Save and Exit button in the top toolbar.
  8. Complete additional policies (if required) for all variations of the attribute results
