This article provides you with a clear understanding of the Monitoring Process that Mimecast uses on its platform for delivering emails. Before Mimecast can deliver an email, certain checks must be performed, and policies must be applied as required. Emails are temporarily queued in the Processing Queue while these activities are being performed. In the Delivery Queue, emails await delivery once they have been completed.
The Processing Queue does not need to be monitored by an Administrator. Emails should only remain in the queue for a short period of time since they are processed immediately upon receipt and then moved to the Delivery Queue. As a result of the increased processing required for larger mailshots, emails can sometimes be queued in the Processing Queue .
Mimecast will not process more than 10 identical emails coming from the same sender going outbound to different recipients at one time, as this would resemble a mailshot, and the priority of these emails is automatically lowered.
Using the Processing Queue
To access the Processing Queue:
- Log in to the Mimecast Administration Console.
- Select the Message Center | Processing Queues menu item.
The following information is provided:
| Column | Entries | Description |
|---|---|---|
| From | Email address of sender. | Details of the sender. |
| To | Email address of recipient. | Details of the recipient. |
| Email Direction | Arrow indicator Inbound Arrow indicator outbound. | Shows the direction of the email (inbound or outbound). |
| Status and Info | Queued for Processing. | Applicable checks and policies are being applied. |
| Try | The numeric value between 1 and 31. | The number of retry attempts for this email. |
| Size | Numeric value in kilobytes. | Size of the email message. |
| Status | Locked (Red Indicator). | The email is currently locked. |
| Delayed (Orange Indicator). | The email is queued for processing. | |
| Normal (Green Indicator). | The email is awaiting the next retry interval. |
The Processing Queue also provides options to Retry, Reject, or Bounce an email; however, these should be used with caution and with the assistance of Mimecast Support.
For a single entry, right-click on the email (or click on the context menu icon) and select the desired action, or for multiple entries, use the check box next to the message and select from the action icons:
| Icon | Action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Retry Selected Items | Forces a manual retry of the email. | Email delivery is immediately retried, and the retry count increases by one. |
| Reject Selected Items | Rejects the email. | Email is rejected and removed from Delivery Queue. A delivery failure notification is sent to the internal sender of the email. |
| Early Bounce Selected Items | Early bounces the email. | Causes the delivery attempts to be increased to a maximum of 30 attempts, causing delivery to fail. A delivery failure notification is sent to the internal sender of the email, but the message is recoverable as it has been accepted. |
