This article contains information on managing emails on hold in Mimecast for Mac, including releasing, rejecting, blocking, and permitting senders, as well as accessing moderated on-hold queues for enhanced email control.
Introduction
Your Administrator may have email policies in place that put emails on Hold in Mimecast. These could be based on Spam, Attachment, or Content Examination Policies, which are designed to prevent unwanted emails from reaching your Inbox.
The Personal On Hold viewer allows you to view the emails that have been held, and to decide if you want to release them or reject them.
Emails can be released or rejected, either individually or in bulk. Addresses or domains can also be blocked when emails are released or rejected.
If you do not Release or Reject an email from the Hold queue, the email will automatically be removed after 14 days. You will still be able to retrieve the email from the Archive, if configured by your Administrator.

Rejecting Messages
- Open the Mimecast for Mac application, and ensure you are logged in.
- Navigate to Personal On Hold from the main left hand menu.
- Select a single or multiple messages.
- Using the reject icon, select one of the following desired actions:
Multi-selecting emails and then using the right-click context menu will also allow the required action to be undertaken.
Menu Item Description Reject The email is removed from the viewer, and a notification is sent to the sender. Future emails from this sender may be held. Reject and Block Address The email is removed from the viewer, a notification is sent to the sender, and a Block Policy is created for their email address (e.g. sender@company.com). This means that the sender will be unable to send emails to you in the future, but you are able to remove this policy using Managed Senders. Reject and Block Domain The email is removed from the viewer, a notification is sent to the sender, and a Block Policy is created for their domain name (e.g. company.com). This means that any senders from that domain will be unable to send emails to you in the future, but you are able to remove this policy using Managed Senders.
Releasing Messages
- Open the Mimecast for Mac application, and ensure you are logged in.
- Navigate to Personal On Hold from the main left hand menu.
- Select a single or multiple messages.
- Using the release icon, select one of the following desired actions:
Menu Item Description Release The email is removed from the viewer, and is delivered to your Inbox. Future emails from the sender may be held. Release and Permit Address The email is removed from the viewer, is delivered to your inbox, and a Permit Policy is created for the email address of the sender (e.g. sender@company.com). A Permit Policy will bypass spam checks on future emails from this sender, so that they are not held by the Spam Policy. You are able to remove this policy using Managed Senders. Release and Permit Domain The email is removed from the viewer, is delivered to your Inbox, and a Permit Policy is created for the domain name of the sender (e.g. company.com). A Permit Policy will bypass Spam checks on future emails from senders from that domain, so that they are not held by the Spam Policy. You are able to remove this policy using Managed Senders.
Moderated On Hold
The Moderated On Hold viewer works in the same way as the Personal On Hold viewer, but will display emails Held for other users. For example, you may be able to manage Held emails for a colleague or your manager.
This functionality must be enabled by your Administrator, and by default, will not show any emails.
