Mimecast Customer Care - Too Many Requests Message

This guide describes why end-users receive a Too Many Requests message when accessing Mimecast rewritten URLs and provides guidance for administrators to prevent a repeat.

Reasons Users Receive the Message

The message is received when multiple requests are made to access a Mimecast service in a short timeframe (e.g., a Targeted Threat Protection - URL Protect link). Targeted Threat Protection - URL Protect rewrites all inbound URLs to make them safe. Should these links be shared and accessed simultaneously in high volumes, end users may temporarily receive the message.

Although Targeted Threat Protection - URL Protect has been used as an example, the "Too many requests" message can be received when accessing other Mimecast services (e.g., the Administration Console login dialog).

Methods to Prevent Users from Receiving the Message

If an end-user receives the Too many requests message, the following actions can be taken to avoid a repeat:

  • Tell the end users to wait a few minutes and try re-accessing the link. This spreads the number of requests over a wider time frame, avoiding receiving the message.
  • Educate end users to avoid sending rewritten Targeted Threat Protection - URL Protect links externally. Instead, we recommend sending the original unwritten link if a link must be distributed.
  • Create a Managed URL as part of Targeted Threat Protection - URL Protect's functionality. See the Targeted Threat Protection - Managed URLs page for further details.
