Authentication - Forcing Re-registration for Two Step Authentication

This article contains information on forcing re-registration for Mimecast Two-Step Authentication, including steps to reset a user's authenticator setup and details about confirmation emails sent after successful re-registration.

Forcing Re-registration

When a device a user has used to set up an Authenticator application with Mimecast is lost or stolen, you can force them to re-register. This removes the previous secret associated with the user from Mimecast and forces them through the registration process the next time they log in to Mimecast.

You can force re-registration by using the following steps:

  1. Log in to the Mimecast Administration Console.
  2. Navigate to Directories | Internal Directories.
  3. Click on the Domain that the user belongs to.
  4. Click on the User. The user settings page is displayed.
  5. Click on the Force Reregistration button in the 2-Step Authentication section.
  6. Click on Save and Exit to return to the user list.

When a user has successfully registered their second factor, they will receive a confirmation email:

Points to note:

  • The confirmation email cannot be customized within Notification Sets.
  • The confirmation email supports Branding and Preferred Language (English or German).
  • The confirmation email is a security feature and, therefore, cannot be disabled.
