Journaling - Configuring Journaling on Your Email Server or Hosted Email Service

This article contains information on configuring Journaling for various email systems, including Microsoft 365, On-Premises Exchange, Hosted Exchange, Google Workspace, and Mimecast, with specific instructions for each platform.

The process for configuring Journaling on your email server or hosted email service depends on the type of exchange you use. See the relevant section below.

Microsoft 365 Exchange

Follow the instructions in the Configuring Microsoft 365 Journaling page.

On-Premises Exchange

The process for configuring journaling on an On-Premises Exchange depends on the type of exchange you use. Click on the relevant page below for full details:

Hosted Exchange (HEX)

As journaling is a standard Exchange feature, all Hosted Exchange (HEX) environments should support journaling. This normally requires a separate Organization Unit (OU) created for each tenant. Once this is done, each tenant has the ability to configure their own organization settings. The tenant administrator logs into the web console to configure a journal rule.

Provide your hosting provider with the instructions relevant to your version of Exchange. See the links above for further details.

Google Workspace

Follow the instructions in the Configuring Journaling for Google Workspace page.

Adding the Internal Domain to Mimecast

An internal domain (e.g. journaling.domain.com) is added to your account as part of the Connect Process. A journal email address is also created in the internal domain by running an LDAP synchronization.

Creating a Journal Connector in Mimecast

A Mimecast journal connector must be created and all configuration changes completed before journaling is enabled. This can be tested in the Administration Console. Read the Journaling page for further information. This can result in a buildup of emails on your mail server.
