Incydr agent software processes

Overview

This article lists and defines the software processes for the insider risk and backup agents.

Insider risk agent

Windows

• Process name: Code42 Incydr Agent
• Location: C:\Program Files\Code42-AAT\
• Runs as: System
• Starts automatically: Yes
• Always running: Yes

Mac

• Process name:
  • Launcher: Code42 AAT Service
  • System extension: com.code42.agent.extension
• Location: /Applications/Code42-AAT.app/
• Runs as: Root
• Starts automatically: Yes
• Always running: Yes

Linux

• Process name: code42-aat
• Location: /opt/code42-aat/bin
• Runs as: Root
• Starts automatically: Yes
• Always running: Yes

Backup agent

Considerations

The file path and user privilege for the processes may vary depending on whether the backup agent is installed for everyone (the default installation type) or installed per user.

Why do I see multiple instances of processes?
You may see multiple processes with the same label (for example, Code42, Code42Desktop.exe, or Electron Helper). Each instance represents a window within the Code42 agent (such as the main window, About, or History). Each window runs as a separate process so that a failure in one process does not impact the other processes. This process model is used in a number of applications, such as Google Chrome.

Windows

Backup agent

Includes both the main backup agent user interface and the Code42 tray app. If both apps are open, multiple processes appear in Task Manager.

  • Installed as user: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\<Local or Roaming>\Programs\Code42\electron
• Runs as: User
• Starts automatically:
  • Backup agent: No
  • Code42 tray app: May be configured to appear in notification area upon logging into your device from Device Preferences > General
• Always running:
  • Backup agent: No
  • Code42 tray app: May be configured from notification area settings

Code42 service

The Code42 service that performs all backup operations in the background on a device running the Code42 agent.

• Process name: Code42Service.exe
• Location:
  • Installed for everyone (default): C:\Program Files\Code42
  • Installed per user: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\<Local or Roaming>\Programs\Code42
• Runs as: System (default) or user (when installed per user)
• Starts automatically: Yes
• Always running: Yes

Mac

Backup agent

Includes both the main backup agent user interface and the Code42 menu bar app. If both apps are open, multiple processes appear in Activity Monitor.

• Process name:
  • Code42 (main process)
  • Electron Helper (one instance per active window)
• Location:
  • Installed for everyone: /Applications/Code42.app/
  • Installed per user: ~/Applications/Code42.app/
• Runs as: User
• Starts automatically:
  • Backup agent: No
  • Code42 menu bar: May be configured to appear in the menu bar upon logging into your device from Device Preferences > General
• Always running:
  • Backup agent: No
  • Code42 menu bar: May be configured from menu bar settings

Code42 service

The Code42 service that performs all backup operations in the background on a device running the Code42 agent.

• Location:
  • Installed for everyone: /Applications/Code42.app/Contents/Library/LaunchServices/
  • Installed per user: ~/Applications/Code42.app/Contents/Library/LaunchServices/
• Runs as: Root (when installed for everyone) or User (when installed per user)
• Starts automatically: Yes
• Always running: Yes
