This article contains information on Mimecast's Email Security Setup Wizard onboarding checklist, covering domain validation, DNS changes, anti-spoofing, MX/SPF record updates, outbound IPs, email environment credentials, and relay/forwarding email configurations to ensure a smooth onboarding process.
Use this checklist as an aid to gather all the required information for your onboarding process.
This article is relevant to the Jersey region only.
- Domains
- Record all the domains your company uses.
- All domains can be validated during your onboarding process.
- Anti-spoofing
- Do you have any legitimate services that send email from your domains? If so, you will need the IP addresses from which these emails are sent.
- DNS Changes
- DNS Record Control
- Before starting the onboarding process, ensure you have the ability to change DNS records yourself, this could mean having access to a DNS control panel at a domain registrar or hosting provider. If you are operating your own DNS servers, make sure that you have the right permissions.
- DNS Record Control
- TTL
- When migrating to a new email solution provider it is important to verify and adjust the DNS TTL on the records that are going to change in advance. Adjusting your TTL and DNS record at the same time may result in delays beyond the TTL.
- Having the shortest possible TTL interval allows for a smooth cut-over or fall-back when encountering problems.
- A TTL of 600 seconds is recommended.
- MX Record
- Your MX record will need to be updated to specify Mimecast as a server responsible for accepting email for your domain.
- Before starting the onboarding process, validate if you have the ability to update the MX records for your domain yourself.
- SPF Record
- Your SPF record will need to be updated to specify Mimecast as an email server responsible for sending email on behalf of your domain.
- Before starting the onboarding process, validate if you have the ability to update the SPF and / or TXT records for your domain yourself.
- Outbound IP
- Record any IP addresses your company uses to send outbound emails.
- Email Environment Credentials
- Have your Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace credentials ready or the appropriate permissions to do infrastructure changes.
- Relay/Forwarding Emails
- If you allow the relay of emails to external domains, please capture all the email addresses the messages are sent to.
- If you have any distribution lists holding external members, and this list accepts messages from external senders, please capture the external member email addresses.
