Email Security - API - Overview

This article contains information on Mimecast's Email Security - API-Based deployment, including what it is, how it works, and the threats it protects against.

What is API-Based Email Security?

API-Based Email Security provides advanced threat protection by analyzing emails after they've been processed by your email platform. Unlike traditional gateway solutions that inspect messages before delivery, API-based protection connects directly to your email platform through APIs to scan messages that have already reached user mailboxes. This post-delivery approach focuses on detecting more advanced threats that require deeper analysis and behavioral indicators to identify.

How it Works

Email Security - API continuously monitors your email environment through a Secure API connection to your email platform. Once connected, Mimecast scans messages in user mailboxes and applies multiple layers of protection to identify threats. When a threat is detected, Mimecast can automatically quarantine suspicious messages or alert administrators for review.

By maintaining continuous visibility into your email environment, API-based protection provides an additional security layer that complements existing defenses.

Threats Protected Against

Email Security - APIprotects your organization against advanced threats that target email platforms. This includes phishing attacks designed to steal credentials or sensitive information, and malware that attempts to compromise systems after delivery.

The protection extends to sophisticated attacks that use advanced evasion techniques. By analyzing messages that have already been delivered, the solution can apply behavioral analysis, user context, and updated threat intelligence to identify threats that traditional defenses miss. This post-delivery analysis is essential for defending against targeted attacks that are specifically crafted to evade initial security controls.

Email Security - API is currently available for Microsoft 365 environments. Support for additional email platforms is planned for future releases.
