Aware now supports Slack Canvases and Lists shared as attachments in Slack channels. This article explains how these objects are ingested, how they appear in Aware, and what this means for search, compliance, and analytics.
Overview
Mimecast provides a Slack integration for customers using Aware as a service. With this integration enabled, Aware automatically ingests and processes Slack Canvases and Lists when they are shared as attachments in Slack channels.
All of the same file capabilities you are used to in Aware apply to Slack Canvases and Lists. This includes search and discovery, analytics, and compliance coverage. Canvas and List content becomes fully searchable alongside your other Slack files and messages, is subject to your existing retention and compliance controls, and is reflected in your Aware analytics.
Customers interested in the Slack integration can review additional integration details on Mimecast's Technology Partner integration page, Slack technology partner integration.
Considerations
Keep the following points in mind when working with Slack Canvases and Lists in Aware:
- Attachment-based capture: Slack Canvases and Lists are captured by Aware when they are shared in a Slack channel as an attachment.
- Automatic coverage: No additional configuration is required. Coverage begins automatically as Canvases and Lists are shared in your channels.
- Consistent file handling: Canvases and Lists inherit all existing Aware file capabilities, including search, analytics, retention, and compliance controls.
- Download format: When a Canvas is downloaded from Aware, it is delivered as an HTML file. The downloaded version does not retain the original formatting and styling as it appears natively in Slack.
- Visualization in Aware: Canvases shared in channels are visible in Aware search experiences (such as Search & Discover) and in Signal, providing visibility into how Canvas content is shared across your workspace.
Prerequisites
The following requirements apply to using Slack Canvas and List support with Aware:
- You must be using Aware as a service.
- The Slack integration must be in place for your Aware environment (see the Slack technology partner integration page for more information).
- Mimecast currently supports native integrations for Aware, Engage, and Incydr products. If you do not have these specific Mimecast products, the standard Slack integration may not be supported.
How Canvases and Lists Work in Aware
Once the Slack integration is configured for Aware, Canvas and List content is handled like other Slack files:
- Ingestion: When a Canvas or List is shared as an attachment in a Slack channel, Aware automatically ingests and processes the content.
- Processing: The same processing pipeline used for other Slack files (including compliance and retention logic) is applied to Canvases and Lists.
- Coverage: All relevant activity around shared Canvases and Lists is captured for search, analytics, and compliance in Aware.
How Canvases and Lists Appear in Aware
Slack Canvases and Lists appear across Aware experiences in a manner consistent with other file types.
Search & Discover
Canvas content is fully searchable and surfaced in Search & Discover like any other file. Users can discover Canvas content alongside Slack messages and other shared files:
- Canvas and List content is indexed and available in search results.
- Results show Canvases as file objects, allowing you to review the captured content in context.
Signal
Canvases that are shared in Slack channels are also captured in Signal:
- Signal provides visibility into how and where Canvas content is being shared across your workspace.
- Canvas-related activity contributes to the insights available in your Aware analytics.
