Overview
After careful evaluation, Mimecast has made the decision to End-of-Life Web Security starting August 2nd, 2026. Customers will have 12 months to transition to an alternative solution, with service being fully discontinued on August 2nd, 2027. We recognize this requires you to make a change, and we are committed to making that transition as straightforward as possible. Retiring Web Security allows Mimecast to concentrate investment on its core strengths in Human/Agent risk, email security, governance and compliance, and data protection.
Recommended actions
To prepare for the retirement of Web Security, we recommend that you:
- Identify your current usage: Review which users, locations, or device groups are protected via Mimecast Web Security DNS routing, and assess your dependency on current policy configurations and reporting.
- Select a replacement solution: Engage your IT security team or MSSP to evaluate and procure an alternative DNS filtering or secure web gateway solution with sufficient lead time before August 2nd, 2027.
- Update DNS routing: Reconfigure affected endpoints, routers, or MDM profiles to route DNS queries to your replacement provider prior to the retirement date.
- Export historical data if required: Export any Web Security activity logs or reports needed for compliance, audit, or forensic purposes before your retention period expires. Contact your Mimecast Customer Success Manager for guidance.
- Ensure you have recorded your uninstaller password prior to the end of the license expiration date. An example of the uninstaller password is: 837291046523, and an example command used to uninstall the agent with said password would be:
msiexec /x "Mimecast Security Agent (32) 1.1.1054.msi" /qr REMOVAL_PASS=UninstallPasswordAdcon /norestart
If you have not recorded the password before license expiration, and you have lost access to their Administration Console, the advice is to do the following:
Stop the Mimecast Security Agent service from services.msc.
Delete the following keys from the registry:
-
regedit
-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Mimecast Security Agent\MSIStrings
MSA.HASH
MSA.SALT
MSA.ITERATIONS
-
Uninstall the Mimecast Security Agent (this involves using the Control Panel or writing a basic script, since the uninstall password is no longer needed)
If your organization has already migrated web filtering to another platform, no further action is required beyond confirming your DNS routing has been updated.
