Overview

Mimecast is pleased to announce a new in-app experience on the Human Risk & Command Center (HRCC) Dashboard and Individual Risk Profile pages. Users can now view detailed explanations of how human risk scores are calculated and interact with simulations to model different risk scenarios all from within the product.

What's New

Human Risk Score Explanation Side Drawer

A new side drawer is accessible from the HRCC Dashboard and Individual Risk Profile pages, providing transparency into how scores are derived at both the organization and individual levels.

Organization Human Risk Score

  • The Organization Human Risk Score is the simple average of all individual scores, ranging from 0 (negligible) to 10 (very high risk).
  • Formula: Org HRS = Σ(individual scores) ÷ number of scores
  • Department and location risk indexes use a 90% confidence interval lower bound MAX(0, AVG − 1.65 × STDDEV / √n) to prevent small, high-variance groups from being over-weighted.

Individual Human Risk Score

  • Individual scores range from 0 to 10, where lower is better.
  • Risk levels: Very Low (0–1.9) | Low (2.0–3.9) | Medium (4.0–5.9) | High (6.0–7.9) | Very High (8.0–10)
  • Formula: Individual HRS = Σ(weight × category score) ÷ Σ weights
  • Recoverable scores decay approximately 0.028 per day with no risky events (a score of 10 returns to 0 after ~360 days).
  • Simple scores are running tallies; good behaviors subtract from the score, while bad behaviors add to it.
  • Available behavior categories depend on the customer's licensed products and configured HRCC integrations.

Interactive Score Simulation

Users can model "what-if" scenarios using an interactive simulation within the same side drawer.

Organization Score Simulation

  • Starting total users reflects the customer's current user count.
  • Default risk band distribution: Very High 5% | High 10% | Medium 20% | Low 30% | Very Low 35%
  • Risk band midpoints used: Very High 9.0 | High 7.0 | Medium 5.0 | Low 3.0 | Very Low 1.0
  • Users can adjust the number of users per band (total updates automatically) and reset to defaults.

Individual Score Simulation

  • All five behavior scores are adjustable from 0 to 10 in increments of 0.1.
  • Behaviors the customer has not licensed are disabled and excluded from the calculation.
  • Users can toggle behaviors on or off and reset to defaults (all scores set to 5.0).
  • The simulation displays the calculated score, risk level, and the full weighted equation with values.

Where to Access

  • HRCC Dashboard: Click the Human Risk Score card to open the organization-level explanation and simulation. Navigate to the individual level from within the drawer.
  • Individual Risk Profile pages: Access the individual score explanation and simulation directly from a user's profile page.
