Issue

We are aware that non-MEIR customers have been receiving unexpected email notifications when messages reported via the Admin Console are classified by Mimecast.

When an email is reported via the Admin Console and Mimecast's security team classifies it, a notification is automatically sent to the reporting admin. This is expected behaviour for MEIR customers. Non-MEIR customers have also been receiving these notifications unexpectedly.

The notifications are a genuine classification update - your admin-reported email has been reviewed and a verdict has been applied. However, we understand that receiving these notifications without context or without having subscribed to the MEIR service is unexpected and disruptive.

Workaround

If you would like to stop receiving these unexpected classification notifications, you can have them turned off at the tenant level.

Requesting notification disablement via Mimecast Support

To disable these notifications for your account:

  • Contact Mimecast Support.
  • Request that non-MEIR admin report classification notifications be disabled for your account, referencing this Known Issue article.
  • Include your account ID in the request so the change is applied to the correct tenant.

Once Support disables these notifications for your account, they will remain turned off and will not be automatically re-enabled.

If your team finds these classification updates useful, no workaround is required. You can continue to use the notifications as-is until further controls are available.

Planned self-service controls

We are building the ability to manage these notification preferences directly in the Administration Console. This will allow you to opt in or opt out of classification notifications at any time without needing to contact Support. This is planned for Q3 2026. We will share a Service Update when this is available.
