This article provides an overview of how to send and manage Secure Messages in the Mimecast Personal Portal, including sending secure messages to external recipients, managing message expiry, viewing read status, and recalling messages when necessary.
Considerations
- Secure Messaging is only applicable to outbound messages to external recipients. When you use this option, external recipients will receive a notification inviting them to view your email in the Mimecast Secure Messaging Portal.
- The Receipt Delivery Status of Secure Messages may not be reflected accurately within the Mimecast Personal Portal, despite messages being delivered successfully.
- The Compose feature does not support the inclusion of inline, or embedded images in email. Any inline images included will show within the Mimecast Personal Portal environment, but will not display when messages are sent outside of Mimecast.
Sending a secure message using the Mimecast Personal Portal
You can send a secure message in the Mimecast Personal Portal by using the following steps:
- Log in to the Mimecast Personal Portal.
- Compose a Message.
- Complete the Recipient, Subject, and Body as required.
When composing a Secure Message, you cannot use the "BCC" address field.
- Select the Send Using Mimecast Secure Messaging icon.
- Select the Definition you would like to be applied.
- Click OK. You will see a notification bar in the message window to confirm your action.
After sending a Secure Message, you are able to perform a number of management tasks for the item from within your Online Sent Items view. These actions include:
- Viewing the message's read status
- Extending the expiry of a message.
- Recalling a message that was sent by mistake.
Manage a Secure Messages
You can manage a secure message in the Mimecast Personal Portal, by using the following steps:
- Log in to the Mimecast Personal Portal.
- Open Online Sent Items and locate the Secure Message you wish to manage.
- Once the message has been opened you will see the Secure Messaging information bar in the message window.
- From here you can:

- View the read status of the message.
- View information about the Secure Messaging definition applied to the message and the associated actions permitted for the recipient(s).
- Use the available controls at the top of the message to extend the expiry or recall the message.
