Connect Application - Validating Domains

Overview

This article provides guidelines on how to validate your domains. This applies to new clients connecting with Mimecast using The Connect Application. If you are not using the Connect Application, see the Connect Process Steps

The process of validating your domains involves:

Walkthrough

To set up your Mimecast account, you must validate that you own each of the domains you wish to connect, starting with your primary domain. Once this has been validated, you can validate any others. Thankfully, the Connect Application knows this and automatically presents you with your primary domain when you start this task. If you have any subdomains, you can add these after each domain has been verified. Subdomains do not require any additional verification.

When you validate your primary domain using the Mimecast Administration Console, you are presented with the option to move to the summary. The section below Sharing the Validation Code may be helpful if you are not responsible for managing your domain registrar.

Validating Your Primary Domain

To validate your primary domain:

1. Select the Platform | Validate Your Domains menu item. Your primary domain is displayed.
2. Click the Get Verification Code button. A verification code is displayed.
3. Copy the Verification Code to your clipboard.
4. Create either:

• • • DNS TXT Record:
      • Create a DNS TXT Record on your domain registrar in the domain's zone.
      • Enter @ into the Host field.
      • Copy the Verification Code from the "Target" field of the Connect Application to your clipboard.
      • Paste the Verification Code into the DNS TXT record.
      • Save the changes.
    • DNS CNAME record:
      • Create a DNS CNAME Record on your domain registrar in the domain's zone.
      • Copy the Verification Code from the "Destination" field of the Connect Application to your clipboard.
      • Paste the Verification Code into the Host field.
      • Point the host to validate-domain.mimecast.com.
      • Save the changes.

5. Click on either the:

• • • Configure TXT tab if you are creating a DNS TXT record.
    • Configure CNAME tab if you are creating a DNS CNAME record.
      

6. Wait a few minutes for the DNS system to be updated.
7. Click the Validate Domain button. We'll verify the domain and display the following message when this is successful:

Validating Other Domains

Once your primary domain has been validated, you can validate any other domains you own. This requires you to add them to the domain list displayed in the wizard. How you do this depends on whether one or more domains are to be added.

You don't have to wait for your primary domain to be verified before adding additional domains. If you aren't responsible for administrating your domain registrar, read the Sharing the Validation Code section below.

Validating a Single Domain

1. Click on the Add a Single Domain button.
2. Enter the Domain Name in the field that displays.
3. Click on the Add button.
   
   
4. Create either:

• • • DNS TXT Record:
      • Create a DNS TXT Record on your domain registrar in the domain's zone.
      • Enter @ into the Host field.
      • Copy the Verification Code from the "Target" field of the Connect Application to your clipboard.
      • Paste the Verification Code into the DNS TXT record.
      • Save the changes.
    • DNS CNAME record:
      • Create a DNS CNAME Record on your domain registrar in the domain's zone.
      • Copy the Verification Code from the "Destination" field of the Connect Application to your clipboard.
      • Paste the Verification Code into the Host field.
      • Point the host to validate-domain.mimecast.com.
      • Save the changes.

5. Click on either the:

• • • Configure TXT tab if you are creating a DNS TXT record.
    • Configure CNAME tab if you are creating a DNS CNAME record.
      

6. Wait a few minutes for the DNS system to be updated, and click the Validate link to the right of the domain. We'll verify the domain and display a message when this is successful.

Validating Multiple Domains

To validate multiple domains:

1. Click the Arrow to the right of the Add a Single Domain button. A popup menu is displayed.
2. Select the Add Multiple Domains menu item.
   
3. Enter each Domain Name on a separate line in the popup dialog. You can enter up to 50 at a time.
4. Click the Continue button. The domain names are listed, and a green tick will show they are valid.
5. Check that there are no errors in the domain names, and click the Add button.
6. A verification code is displayed next to either the Target or Destination field, depending on whether you're using a DNS TXT or DNS CNAME record.
7. Copy the Verification Code to your clipboard.
8. Click the Delete link if there is a domain that you no longer wish to be added.
   
   
9. Create either:

• • • DNS TXT record:
      • Create a DNS TXT Record on your domain registrar in the domain's zone.
      • Enter @ into the Host field.
      • Paste the Verification Code into the DNS TXT record.
      • Save the changes.
    • DNS CNAME record:
      • Create a DNS CNAME Record on your domain registrar in the domain's zone.
      • Paste the Verification Code into the Host field.
      • Point the host to validate-domain.mimecast.com.
      • Save the changes.

10. Click on either the:

• • • Configure TXT tab if you are creating a DNS TXT record.
    • Configure CNAME tab if you are creating a DNS CNAME record.
      
      

11. Wait a few minutes for the DNS system to be updated, and either: 

• • • Click the Validate All button to validate all the added domains.
    • Click the Validate link to the right of a domain to validate just that domain.

      We'll verify the domain(s) and display a message when this is successful.

Adding Subdomains

To add any subdomains to a domain once it has been validated:

1. Click the Add Subdomain button underneath the domain it is being added to. A text box is displayed before the domain name.
2. Enter the Subdomain into the text box.
3. Click the Add button.
4. Repeat Steps 1-3 to add another subdomain.

Sharing the Validation Code

If you aren't responsible for administrating your domain registrar, you'll need to share the domain and validation code with the appropriate individual. Below is a quick and easy way for you to accomplish this.

To share the domain and validation code:

1. Click the Share button. A message is created in your email client with some predefined template text.
2. Amend the text as required.
3. Add the recipients as required.
4. Send the message.

Displaying Your Domains

The wizard displays all your domains so you can:

• • • View the validation status.
    • Validate a domain.
    • Delete a domain.

To filter your domains based on their validation status, click on one of the following icons in the top right-hand corner. The number of domains in each status is displayed in round brackets:
